My Personal Thoughts
One of the main reasons I thought we were invading Iraq is because Saddam Hussein tortured his own people. His sons took party members and civilians alike into these terrible rooms and strung them up and recorded them being tortured and then the story went they would watch it for family get together. When the weapons of mass destruction ended up being a complete lie pushed by a highly corrupt group of conspiring men working for the worlds big money and big business; I was still ok with Saddam Huissein being ousted from his role as secular dictator over a third world middle eastern sovereign nation because well Saddam tortured and that meant he was evil.
It was not long after our invasion of Iraq that a little known naval base in Cuba was unveiled to the world in hideous and graphic images of our nations service men and women torturing men from Iraq and Afghanistan shipped there mostly from being body snatched by special forces teams who were part of JSOC, the same group that assassinated Pat Tillman, and who had zero trials or any due process of any kind. Most of the inhabitants did not get to contact their families and they were treated as poorly as could be treated without causing catastrophic physical harm. I remember this happening and being horrified at the images and my initial preconditioned reaction of anger for the press for showing these images; they put America in such a horrible light! Can you believe that? I got mad at the reporters for exposing that we were torturing young Iraq’s and Afghanis. It took years to decondition, to realize that our crap really stinks just like anyone else’s crap. Torture? And then this became the standard conservative position, to torture!?!
The Golden Rule
Nothing like Ron Paul declaring in 2008 that he wants America’s policy to follow the golden rule, to a room full of “conservatives” which really are “new conservatives” or neocons, and got booed! Booed! By the moral right for saying we should treat others and other nations as we want to be treated.
#1 this is why we do not torture in the first place on a basic level, because we promised not to do it because we do not want anyone doing that to our boys. When your son gets conscripted by force into the military to go fight, we want assurance that when he gets shot, that the medics won’t be targeted; we want assurance as well that when he gets caught or surrenders, that he is not tortured. How do we ensure that our boys are not tortured? BY NOT TORTURING! How arrogant are we to think we are so invincible that we can torture, that we can terrorize the youth of foreign nations on the other side of the planet and not suffer some serious consequences to this; the day will come that we will have our sons and daughters captured and tortured and we will cry foul and they will laugh because what goes around comes around.
Its Against the Law
The same people who almost have a seizure at the thought of a neighbor walking into a pharmacy and purchasing any medicine they think they need or want and want to throw any violators of pharmaceutical laws in jail for years not to mention stripping them of their parental rights are totally fine with us completely violating international law that we signed onto in a just and due method namely the Geneva Conventions. It is literally against the laws of war that we helped to create; that we executed Nazi’s under, to torture. So why, in any way, shape or manner would we want to even approach the line and let’s be honest, there is no argument anymore that enhanced interrogations were just that, harmless interrogations, we know for a fact that there were true and real atrocities committed and of course there was, there will always be those who push the line in such a dark and unsupervised world, and that is illegal.
We are a government of, by, and for the people; how can we pretend to be ok with torture especially in violation of law? The leadership country cannot be, we must follow the law if there is any hope of any other nation following those same laws.
Inherently Immoral and Excessively Evil
There is nothing that surpasses physical violence and shear evil than torture. To take someone potentially innocent and do unspeakable acts to them often with them fully aware that death is waiting at the end or at a minimum make them think that death is awaiting them is the epitome and peak of evil doing. How do we as a nation walk away from torture? When I try and tell others what surfaced in the Senates report on torture they do not want to hear it because it is too evil so they plug their ears, cover their eyes and their mouth. We literally raped young children in front of their mothers to get those mothers to speak or what? Who knows! How does someone doing the torture walk away from that act as an immoral person? Do we really want our young military women standing by listening to screams and pleas and watch us freeze and water soak naked men in the utmost of humiliating ways?
Wholly Ineffective: A Genuine Lie
Torture does not work. It is not meant to work. Not a single piece of useful or trustworthy intelligence will ever come from torture. Torture, and this is the complete and utter truth, is utterly calculated to terrorize. It is a highly effective tool for totalitarian governments with evil dictating leaders to subdue their population. This means that in the history of the world, iron fisted monarchs and such utilized torture to squash rebellion and dissent, to control and manipulate, to stay in power. There is no scenario in which down the road a nation that allows torture will not find that same tactic and method used against its own people; for it is a tool of the state to be used against its own people, not to protect them from others especially those so called terrorists we cower from when the torturer is the greatest terrorist of all! Bin Laden was not killed because of torture, he was allowed to live so long because we tortured!
Marginally Diminished Returns
I am guessing when a conservative or a genuine American pictures torture, they don’t picture dark pits in the ground where unsupervised Army Officers and Black Operation CIA agents brutally abuse innocent children in front of the screaming and begging mothers; they picture hero’s like Jack Bower from 24 racing to save the city from an atomic bomb set to go off and with minutes to spare they stab a knife into the knee cap of a low level conspirator and in the end the means were justified by the positive outcome!
So lets run with this, let’s say that this is true, that there is a moment in time where torture is successfully deployed to save the world. That’s it, it won’t work so well the next time. The next time, the conspirators will do all they can to escape, to hide better or will carry suicide pills or will fight harder because they know that if they surrender, if they get caught, their opposition will torture them. No, over time, torture only makes intelligence gathering that much more difficult and puts us at that much more of a risk. It is a strictly short term tactic that is extremely counterproductive. Therefore, as a parent, and I mean this as a statement to wake you up, if you support torture, you literally espouse policy that puts your children’s America in that much greater risk from the same enemy you claim you are against.
If you made it this far into the article then you probably didn’t support torture in the first place as its hard to imagine a supporter reading the things I stated and not looking away in recoiled horror not out of factual rebuttle but out of a well manipulated false sense of patriotism! With that said, there is an alternative.
First, we declare war!
We the people of the United States should only detain enemy combatants after we have declared war on them. So, we need a declaration of war. A declaration of war is explicitly required in the constitution. If we do not follow the constitution, we are no longer in a Republic ruled by the Rule of Law.
Second, we reward those who follow the law!
Once we have that declaration of war, we set up the most luxurious prisoner of war camps as possible and try our best to capture as many uniformed enemies as humanly possible. We treat a captured enemy combatant wearing a uniform like they are our neighbor next door and we let them write home about how they are being treated with pictures of their weight gain and good health.
Third, We Follow The Law!
Those caught on a field of battle as combatants who are not wearing a proper uniform should be treated as spy’s. They should be tried quickly in a military tribunal in a public and proper manner with family members being informed of the events. Once they have been convicted as a spy, they should be interrogated in a respectful manner and then executed in as humane a way as possible and quickly.
Fourth, We Never Let Go Of Due Process
Since most of the people tortured were body snatched out of their home in the middle of the night by JSOC off of the orders of the Department of State employees, then there is only one thing for these people: they should be given a proper civilian trial. As with all civilian trials, they will be given the opportunity for a plea deal. In these plea deals, if we really think they have information that could really help the interest of the united states, then we offer them things like money, freedom, homes, citizenship, etc. in return for the information.
Reward, Reward, Reward
We caught Saddam Hussein by informants who wanted the reward money, not by staff we tortured. Real intelligence comes from rewarding; just like police departments in America, they reward, they do not torture. Rewards are the answer to torture. Torture does not work, rewards do! The more we reward, the more we keep our word, the more people will trust our word and come forward to get rewarded. Never forget this principle when told there is no other way, we use God’s way.
In summary, don’t give in to the animal instinct to dehumanize the enemy. Just because they were born in a desert on the Arabian peninsula in a religion we don’t understand does not mean they need to be suffocated, naked, in hypothermic conditions, for days, months, years on end! If they have anything of value, lets buy it from them and set them on their way. If they are dangerous and cannot be allowed free, lets try them, present all the evidence they are evil, and lets execute them in a timely and public manner. We are a humane society with laws and the Rule of Law, without those Laws, we are as evil as those we wish to dehumanize!
