Failing is a strong word. Yet, this is exactly what is happening to the entire up and coming generation of Americans. Millennials are being constantly made fun of for this failure, yet they are the victims, not the ones at fault and to say so is to absolutely not understand the situation. The average Millennial launches at age 30. Launching is referring to cutting the apron strings, building career, starting family, etc. as opposed to previous generations. There are many reasons for this breakdown of the new voting generation, lets explore some of the reasons why.
We are the first generation to have been raised by single parents. More millennials came from traditionally broken homes than came from thriving homes. The nuclear family is the engine that drives society. Fathers, typically by example, show their children what masculinity is and how that same trait applies to treating woman and being a man. Single woman fill roles that even superman cannot do. Being raised in a broken environment has a huge impact on the success of the family’s members.
Although Gen X also had video games at their disposal, it was not the central hallmark of the culture. Playing outside was still a important part of the generation X lifestyle. Sports were watched on TV and then played outside; Millenials watch the games on TV and then simulate them on video games. The outside world is now void of old fashioned laughter, brawling, and clinging of baseball bats.
One Size Fits All Education
Ours is the first generation in which college was and is the most critical component of what our parents raised us to accomplish and is the first generation when free or overly available credit was provided for everyone to receive this said education. The free money allowed for overextended education leading to saturation in degrees causing them to lose their value. Millennials posses a collective overdose of worthless paper stating a degree. This over educating has led this genre to all be officers with few to be the enlisted.
We are the first generation to be saturated with easily available all encompassing elicit images completely transforming the nature of relationships. Pornography as a staple and not a recreation separates the traditional needs between the genders. This saturation of addiction also causes its victims to become increasingly selfish, always pointing things to themselves and to others.
There was a day when friends hung out with each other and were each other’s interactions. This really is not the case anymore as millennials just do not show up at friends but instead have to schedule out so much of their friendships. Hopefully, when millennials have children, they will be able to be better parents when it comes to regulating their children cell phone use, maybe not, either way, the cultural shock of cell phones is devestating in terms of outdoor function and socialization and spontaneous friendships.
Religion plays a critical role in civilized society. Would the Children of Israel ever made it so long in the wilderness without a strict code of conduct? Most likely not, and that code came from God. Millennials were not raised in church, as a whole. They still have the overall desire to be good and moral yet the engrained cycle of going to church is not there.
Career Driven Culture
Woman are expected now more than ever to get a career and launch themselves. This postpones the age in which they want to have kids and get married, compounding the already negative effects of launching late if not causing them entirely. Before the Millennials, woman in combat roles was unheard of; yet the talk and chatter is unceasing. This is not necessarily a good thing. The husband and father being the provider is a natural role in a nuclear society allowing for much closeness and mobility with the rest of the family. Even so, if the husband is the stay at home parent, at least there is a parent in the home. Even Millennials that came from nuclear families most likely were very much not raised by an interactive parent.
War on Terror
Yes all generations have their war, whether WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold War but those did not lead to supreme and overwhelming violations of the Constitution as the War on Terror has created. These same violations have eroded it in a way that does not project internal or domestic security but instead a uncertain feeling. Millinnials may be the first generation of Americans to not be free; that is a scary thought.
The crash of 2008 came as most the earlier Millennials were graduating college especially in fields related to business and finance as well as the service industry as a whole. This state of eternal recession is the first of its kind especially afflicting the fresh out of college workforce. 100 to 1 applicants per opening is not a experience the past has had.
It is now the status quo to be on welfare. This delays launching and stunts development. This, combined with a career driven culture transforms the whole generation into a entitlement generation. When the time finally does come to go to work, they will want what there parents had by that age even though they have been on the governments or their parents dole up until that point.
Technology and booming economies of the 80’s and 90’s led to the parents having wealth and jobs to take care of struggling kids. In older years, Christmases maybe had a good toy included. Today, a bunch of great toys is expected, this is just a symptom of the cause of what has happened to millennials.
