Thus far in the Backyard Economist, we have discussed how climate change is a faux political theory and we have also discussed how climate change is based on a faulty model. With that already established, let’s pretend that it is real. Let’s pretend that it’s not a political theory with a false model and that Carbon emissions are a true threat to life on earth. Well…
This is a tale of two solutions.
The first solution that almost all “concerned” politicians propose, the same people flying around in jumbo jets, is austerity. They want to cap it, they want to tax it, they want to outlaw it, they want to choose who gets to omit it. They want strict central controls over carbon, who gets to emit them, how much they are omitted, who gets to regulate them. They propose command and control options like catalytic converters, factory scrubbers, electric cars, etc. They want to restrict where people get to live, forcing them into cities so they can walk, public transportation, fuel price increases.
A Comparison to Birthing Models
Those who are concerned with overpopulation oftentimes are the same people who seem most concerned with carbon emissions. Well, studying birthing models yields several different outcomes or projections. The “rabbit” model is when populations spawn out of control, consume all the resources, and then crash. On the other side of the spectrum is the demographic model. As populations become more wealthy, they spawn less. This literally means that capitalism is the solution to overpopulation. In a free and capitalistic society, there is no overpopulation. Interestingly enough, capitalistic countries are the ones with the lowest pollution per capita. The USA pollutes a fraction of that of say Mexico or China.
The Demographic Model of Climate Change Prevention
The solution then is to make the whole world wealthier through capitalism. This is the opposite of command and control solutions. If climate change is real, then the only real solution is to free the third world, to have policies of spreading wealth through freedom instead of setting up totalitarian banana republics everywhere our nation occupies. Capitalism, if climate change were real, would be the literal savior of the world!
